About

Deirdre McCrimmon graduated from Edinburgh College of Art with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 1992. She worked for ten years as a freelance scenic artist for Scottish Opera, The Citizens Theatre and various Scottish television companies in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Deirdre now continues with her own art practice and teaching in the Highlands of Scotland. She specialises in the portrait and figure and her work has a strong psychological and meditative quality

Artist Statement

“I have always been drawn to the figure and the portrait. A love of people and an eternal fascination and celebration of all the colours of human nature continue to be a stimulus for my work. Shifting weather and light in our landscape has moved me from a very young age and plays a part in my work. Using elements of landscape throughout the portrait as an emotional tool assists my exploration of state of mind, or the way of being that is present at the time.
Primarily, I use art as a means to understand myself and to process thoughts and feelings. This can sometimes involve recognizing emotions or ideas, acknowledging them visually, accepting them and letting go in a meditative and magical process.”

Art Courses and Workshops

The artist is also a qualified art tutor (Cert Ed DTLLS) and has delivered drawing, painting and print-making courses and workshops for adults for ten years. Her sessions aim to meet the learning needs of each unique individual using an informative and encouraging teaching style. She also offers master-classes for students who wish to develop their own style.
